¡@¡@We are going to talk about the creation of a smoke-free environment here, including smoke-free restaurants, smoke-free hotels, and smoke-free campuses.

¡@¡@When a public place only relies on smoking and no-smoking zones, and upgrading the ventilation system, it doesn't effectively stop the second-hand smoke from doing damage to our health. The only way to ensure that we don't get victimized by the second-hand smoke is to prohibit smoking in all public places. Therefore, promoting smoke-free homes, offices, campuses, and restaurants, and help people liberate themselves from the habit of smoking is the number one goal for the government officials.

To prohibit smoking in all public places is the only way to stop the second-hand smoke from doing damage to our health.

¡@¡@The Executive Yuan Department of Health passed the Tobacco Prevention and Control Act in 1997. On the World No Tobacco Day (May 31) in the following year, the main theme of the anti-tobacco activity was "Advocate for a Tobacco-Free World". Various organizations and industries, including restaurants, convenient stores, hotels, and medical groups, joined force to announce their intention to stop smoking. They promised to turn away any tobacco-related advertisement and activity, and they refused to sell tobacco products, as well as urging the smokers to quit smoking.

¡@¡@On November 9, 2005, the Legislative Yuan passed the Amendment to Tobacco Control and Prevention Act bill, expanding the list of no-smoking areas, such as all schools under the high school level, children's activity area, hotel, restaurant, Karaoke bar, and any office that is occupied by more than three people. Violators will be subject to a fine of NT$2000 to NT$10000.

¡@¡@According to this bill, in places such as college campuses, libraries, museums, art galleries, cultural and social education institutions, outdoor sporting arena, swimming pools, public recreation centers, officially designated places, and public transportation, smoking is only allowed in designated areas, and this area can not take up more than half of the entire space, and it can't be located on route to other areas.

¡@¡@The Tobacco Control and Prevention Act specifies the no-smoking institutions as the pre-K, kindergarten, library, classroom, and laboratory. In the future this list will be expanded to include any school below the high school level and children's activity area. Other no-smoking areas include public transportation, medical office, and financial institution. Movie theatre, hotel, and other indoor facilities will be included in the future.

¡@¡@Based on the guideline of the FCTC, the member nations are required to achieve the goal of smoke-free in all indoor offices and public places in the next few years. Even though the Legislative Yuan's definition of no-smoking places are still not as comprehensive as the FCTC's, the goal of having a tobacco-free country is the same.
