¡@¡@This
section deals with the global tobacco issues. It would explain
the origin of tobacco, the famous anti-tobacco people in history,
and the anti-tobacco promotion and related news from around the
world, so the general public would gain an even better understanding
of this international danger.
| After
more than 500 years of history, the tobacco could now be found
in every corner of the world. |
¡@¡@Tobacco
is an agricultural product that makes the addicts fascinated and
the anti-tobacco groups clench their teeth and fists. Even since
it was brought out of the American continent in the 16th century,
it was spread to other continents, corresponding with the increased
international trade activities. After more than 500 years of history,
the tobacco could now be found in every corner of the world. It
has brought the tobacco merchants enormous profits, but the profits
were made at the cost of the health of mankind.
¡@¡@With
the lead of nicotine and tar, tobacco products have silently become
a part of our society in times of socializing and solitude. A
cigarette in the mouth, plus the smoker's body language, add up
to an image that the smoker wants to send to others. However,
under the tobacco's pretty wrapping lies the truth of high mortality
rate.
¡@¡@In history,
only the Chinese Ching Dynasty, Turkey, and Russia had make smoking
tobacco a capital crime. During the Ching Dynasty, the citizens
were smoking a mixture of tobacco and opium in order to skirt
the law, but they all eventually smoked opium only because of
the highly addictive nature of opium. The problems created by
"tobacco" and "drugs" still cause tons of
headaches for every country.
¡@¡@In the
past, in an attempt to increase the revenue, the citizens and
officials in many countries would look for places suitable for
the planting of tobacco. They would plant as many kinds of tobacco
as they could. They would only import tobacco from other countries
when they weren't able to plant tobacco or when they could not
harvest enough tobacco domestically. The tobacco industry in those
countries was tied to the taxes and foreign reserve, so it was
considered a cash cow for them.
¡@¡@During
the economic booms of the 1980, there were 27 countries in the
world, including Taiwan, that had a government-controlled tobacco
monopoly. Under this system, a permit needed to be obtained before
tobacco could be planted. For many countries, especially the developing
countries, this industry is the major economic livelihood. This
is one of the reasons why tobacco products have always survived
despite the risk they pose on the human being. There are always
more people starting smoking than quitting.
¡@¡@Anti-tobacco
movements have become a global trend. Since every year 5 million
people die from smoking related diseases worldwide, every nation's
government is making a great effort to work on tobacco control
and prevention policies. However, there are many obstacles along
the way from the legislation to execution of the law, since there
is usually a tremendous amount of pressure coming from the multi-national
tobacco conglomerates and tobacco farmers. The price to pay for
not having a strict anti-tobacco policy is a tarnished international
image and more importantly, the health of the citizens. |
