¡@According to an old saying, "you do not need to leave the house to know what's going on in the world", we have grown to rely heavily on the far-reaching effects of the media. Since the tobacco control and prevention has become a major topic in this world, we have been keeping an eye on the television, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet since the research project started. We have asked our volunteer parent to watch for related news, with the hope of incorporating the latest information from around the world in our project.

¡@¡@In the news articles that we collected, there are viewpoints of two different sides, which enabled us to learn how to think from the two different perspectives. Since the majority believes in their right to breathe air that's free of second-hand smoke, the voice of the smokers was completely drown out. The right of the smokers has thus become the main arguing point of the for-profit organizations. Under this circumstance, a new voice that supported "proportion principle" emerged. They are not necessary pro-tobacco, but they just want the opinions from all sides to be heard.

¡@¡@For example, we have read an article titled "Tobacco Control and Prevention and the Game Theory". This article mentioned that the Nobel Prize winner John Nash had applied the game theory to economics, from which the "Nash Balance" was born. It explained that when the competitors in the game use a strategy that places the opponent's gain into consideration, then the competitors would make the largest gain for themselves. This is the point of equilibrium as well as a turning point when both parties win.

¡@¡@This article gave us great food for thought, and it could provide a reference for the anti-tobacco organizations. This article pointed out that based on the research done at the National Cheng Kung University Institute of Biomedical Engingeering, the poor air quality in the non-smoking area is caused by the sharing of a common heating and ventilation system with the smoking area. Under the same condition, the air pollution and the health risk of copying machines and printers are no less than the second-hand smoke. The author also pointed out that according to a research that involved 529 institutions in the U.S., an independent heating and ventilation system and careful airstream design could effectively improve the air quality.

¡@¡@According to another article, there are four major ways to reduce the amount of second-hand smoke in an indoor environment: designate smoking and non-smoking areas, air-conditioning, air purification and filtering, and ban smoking completely. In June of 2005, the Society's Environmental Tobacco Smoke Position Document Committee, which was formed by 8 elite public health experts appointed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), made a position document claiming that banning smoking completely was the only measure that could provide the least amount of environmental tobacco smoke exposure to the non-smokers.

¡@¡@These opinions all seem to make sense. This is the advantage of reading news articles, because we could learn different perspectives from reading a wide variety of articles. We still firmly believe in quitting smoking, but at least we had learned to think from a different side, enabling the discussion to go deeper and more to the point.
