¡@¡@The
Taiwan Medical Community Tobacco Prevention And Control Alliance
is a anti-tobacco group that was formed on September 9, 2005 by
seventeen medical organizations, including the Taiwan Medical
Association, the Formosan Medical Association, the Taiwan Association
of Family Medicine, the Taiwan Society of Adolescent Medicine,
the Taiwan Society of Family Medicine Education, Taiwan Pediatric
Association, and others.
¡@¡@On the
day the Taiwan Medical Community Tobacco Prevention And Control
Alliance was formed, it was campaigning to raise the price of
cigarettes to NT$150 within three years and to cut the smoking
population in half. According to Dr. Lee Meng-chih, who is the
director of the Institute of Medicine of Chung Shan Medical University,
based on the research of the World Health Organization (WHO),
the smoking population can be reduced by 5% for every ten-dollar
increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes.
¡@¡@Dr. Lee
went on to say that the ratio of the cost of cigarettes to income
in Taiwan is among the lowest in the world. The alliance is seeking
to raise the taxes on tobacco products, so the price of a pack
of cigarettes could reach NT$150, which will effectively cut Taiwan's
smoking population by 50% in ten years. Of the NT$370B of annual
budget for the National Health Insurance, at least NT$20B had
been spent on the treatments of smoking-related diseases, such
as pulmonary diseases, cardiac and arterial diseases, and cancers.
It is obvious that tobacco has become a silent killer of our citizens.
¡@¡@Besides
campaigning to raise the cigarette prices, Dr. Lee is also proactively
persuading our government to enact smoking bans in all the public
places, so we could achieve the goals of tobacco-free homes, workplaces,
and school campuses. Dr. Lee has noted that many women and children
are forced to inhale second-hand smoke at home. Even though it
is difficult to achieve a smoke-free home environment, the alliance
is nevertheless working hard to promote this idea, hoping that
more and more people will finally free themselves from the unhealthiness
of smoking cigarettes.
